Calgary has long been an economic powerhouse for Canada, but we also have farther to go in decarbonizing than other cities. Given the adversity we face, Calgary deserves disproportionate climate investment from Alberta and Canada.
Calgary has a tremendous opportunity to benefit from a strong approach to the climate crisis. Council has signaled that it wants to seize this opportunity. The Community Development Committee will discuss the strategy on May 31st and Council will vote to pass the Climate Strategy in June. Please make sure that our Climate Strategy maximizes the benefits from this opportunity by achieving the priorities for Clean Connected Protected Communities.

There are over 500 places in Calgary devoted to cultures and spirituality and not one is specifically intended for Indigenous peoples. The Indigenous peoples have been asking for an Indigenous Gathering Place for many years. Such a place matters not only to Indigenous peoples, but to all Calgarians as a space to learn and as a commitment to truth and reconciliation in action.
We ask you to join with us and write to our Mayor and City Councillors to encourage them to vote “yes” to the motion for an Indigenous Gathering Place Land Transfer on Feb 15. This is an opportunity to act towards healing and reconciliation, as well as establish a place for community. (Sample letter below.)
