Vote YES on the Climate Strategy and INCLUDE Clean Connected Protected Communities
Climate Change presents Calgary with both existential threats and once-in-a-generation opportunities. With Council’s November 2021 declaration of a Climate Emergency and commitment to net-zero by 2050 it is crucial that Calgary’s upcoming Climate Strategy reflects the urgency of the crisis and opportunity we face. The upcoming decisions on the four year budget make establishing Calgary's direction on climate action even more urgent. Investing in climate action now will help avoid the worst effects of climate change, prepare our communities for severe weather events, and is predicted to save Calgarians an estimated $60-80 billion in energy costs, create over 160,000 jobs, and generate over $60 billion in GDP by 2050. I support the Strategy and efforts to make it even better by adding a clear target for net-zero electricity by 2035, with implementation plans for Clean, Connected, and Protected Communities. Calgary needs a Climate Strategy and I am calling on you to vote “Yes” on the strategy. Calgary also needs to take the Climate Emergency seriously. We cannot keep approving new, carbon-intensive greenfield developments if we want to address the climate crisis. If approved, the eight new developments will add 1 per cent to Calgary’s GHG emissions just as we need to maximize efforts to cut emissions. I am calling on you to vote “No” to the new developments. Calgary has a tremendous opportunity to benefit from a strong approach to the climate crisis. Council has signaled that it wants to seize this opportunity. Now is the time for you to follow through.
